Spring bags

Looking forward to the spring, sun, new plants and trees in bloom, I started working on panels for bags with appliquéd prints by Cori Dantini. All fabric lines designed by her are lively, tender, full of nature and optimism. I just love everything she has made. Every time when I see a picture or hold a piece of her fabric, I feel a very strong source of inspiration. I use her pictures mostly in the form of appliqué, which gives me the opportunity for adding other pieces of fabrics, pieces of lace, buttons, beads or embroidery.

Some time ago I bought linen fabric in a beautiful green. The piece of fabric was just big enough for cutting the base for 7 bags. Unfortunately,  there was not linen enough to cut handles for all 7 bags, I´m going to use also other material and embellish it with scraps of this linen.

From my stash of used materials (old shirts, dresses and trousers) I chose some blues, greens and browns. I didn´t use the cutter, I tore them and used the nice raw edges in the collages.

Then I spent some nice evenings cutting the fabric pictures and combining them with torn pieces of the background fabrics.

One by one I started to applique und quilt the background pieces, using straight and zigzag stitch.  After that the pictures were ironed onto the background panel (I prefer Viesofix for raw edge appliqué, it works excellent) and sewn with machine using free motion sewing. Actually, I didn´t want to do more. But after the first collage was sewn, I saw immediately that this was not the final step. Like so many times before, the work started to live its own life, asked for thread buttons, beads and lace, even a yoyo.

From the seven collages, four are finished by now, let´s look on them.

Happy stitching!
